Recently I got a reciprocating saw. After tracing the outline of the notch using a template and cutting in a couple inches with a circular saw I decided using a handsaw to finish the job was a hassle. The reciprocating saw is only 6amp, but it's works quickly enough and the cut is clean and straight. Afterwards, we cleaned it up with a drawknife and a slick or chisel.
Here's a finished tenon. This timber is cedar and about 18 feet/6 metres long. Some of the others are cypress. They're quite light in colour and take a yellow hue with weathering.
Voila! The first finished joint. It took a long time to cut the mortise, but we've got the hang of it now, so it's become quite enjoyable.
Stay tuned next month for posts and the capping of the foundation.
